Budget Strategy 2018/19

We are now preparing our Budget Strategy for 2018/19, looking at how much our services will cost and the money that is available to deliver them

We are responsible for providing a range of local services - from collecting recycling and waste to looking after parks, gardens and open spaces; from cleaning streets to planning for our district's future; from keeping cafes, restaurants and food outlets safe to tackling unfit private homes.

Some of the things we spent our money on in 2016/17 include:

  • £1.1m keeping the district a clean and tidy place to live, work and visit
  • £1.7m looking after parks, flowerbeds, gardens, open spaces and sports grounds
  • £1.1m collecting household waste, food waste and recycling, and £103,000 on recycling your tins, cans, plastic, paper and glass

You will see that it also covers the cost of services provided by other public service providers.

The charge is split is as follows:

Kent County Council 71%
Shepway Council 15%
Kent Police and Crime Commissioner 10%
Kent and Medway Fire and Rescue Authority 4%

We are now preparing our Budget Strategy for 2018/19, looking at - among other things - how much our services will cost and the money that is available to deliver them. We also estimate how much council tax we need to raise while trying to minimise the burden on local council tax payers.

Here are some key budget facts:

  • We predict that the cost of delivering services in 2017/18 will be £16.7m however we need to reduce spending by £1.5m because the anticipated cost of providing services is going to be higher than the funds that will be available to deliver them
  • There was an increase in our share of the Council Tax of 2%. This is an increase of 9p a week for a band D home compared to 2016/17
  • So far we have identified proposals for savings of £1.27m across a range of services in 2017/18.

You will find the Budget Strategy report, including the savings proposals.
