Neighbourhood development plans

Communities have the right to shape local development through neighbourhood development plans, Neighbourhood Development Orders and Community Right to Build Orders

What are neighbourhood development plans?

In Shepway, the local parish or town council leads on neighbourhood planning. As the Local Planning Authority (LPA), we assist in the development of the plan and have to:

  • consult;
  • organise the independent examination; and,
  • hold a community referendum at the end of the process to ratify the plan.

Once in place, neighbourhood development plans become part of the Local Plan, the framework we use to make planning decisions.

Neighbourhood plans need to be in general conformity with the Local Plan.
