Gurkha Christmas Dinner

The annual Christmas lunch at Shorncliffe Barracks, where traditionally officers serve their men, had an added touch of magic this year.

Shepway District Council paid for a magician, Christmas tree, decorations and crackers as its contribution to the festivities. For many soldiers in the First Gurkha Rifles it was their first taste of a traditional British Christmas since leaving their native Nepal.

Major Shuresh Kumar Thapa said the council's support had been invaluable. "We had a fantastic soldiers Christmas lunch, and boys thoroughly enjoyed it - particular the magician."
