You must tell us about any change in your circumstances, as it may affect the amount of Housing Benefit you get.

Report a change in your circumstances for Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Reduction

What to tell us about

You need to tell us if:

  • your income changes (read a leaflet about what happens to Housing Benefit when you earn more)
  • the amount of savings or capital you have changes
  • you start or stop receiving any benefits or pensions
  • there's a change in who lives in your home
  • a young person living with you leaves school
  • the amount of rent you pay changes
  • you move home (even if it's to another room in the same house)
  • if the income of anyone living in your home changes
  • if your childcare costs start, change or stop

If you're over 60 and get Pension Credit

You need to tell us if:

  • your tenancy or rent changes
  • if you're away from home for more than 13 weeks
  • if there are any changes to the non-dependents in your home

If you get Savings Credit only

You need to tell us if there are any changes to:

  • your Child Benefit
  • your Child Tax Credit
  • your capital where it exceeds £16,000
  • a partner not included in your Pension Credit claim
  • the people who live in your home, for example if someone joins or leaves or is admitted to hospital

What happens if you don't tell us about changes

If you don't tell us about changes that affect how much Housing Benefit you're due, you'll need to pay back any amount that has been overpaid and we may take legal action against you.
