If you report littering to the council and sufficient evidence can be gathered proving that an offence has been committed, we will issue a £50 fixed penalty notice under sections 87 & 88 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 (as ammended by section 18 of the Clean Neighbourhoods & Environment Act 2005). Paying the fixed penalty within 14 days discharges any liability for the offence, however, failure to do so may lead to the offender being prosecuted. If found guilty of such an offence, the maximum fine is currently £2500.
Litter is anything that a person no longer wants such as food wrappers, newspapers, and packaging. It also includes cigarette ends and chewing/bubble gum.
An offence of littering applies to any area that is open to the air and to which the public have access, including private land and land covered by water.
Please give us as much information about the litter as possible. The more detailed the information, the quicker we will be able to resolve the situation.
