Recycling - bags and containers
Rubbish - getting it sorted
You have a box and a bag for your tins, cans, glass, plastic bottles, paper and card. These are collected every week.
In the Box
- Glass - bottles and jars of any colour
- Cans - drink and food cans
- Plastic bottles - drink, household detergent and cleaner bottles (up to 3ltr)
Some tips
- Rinse the cans, bottles and jars (you don't need to remove the labels) before putting them in your black box. Please don't put out cans and tins that have not been rinsed. Our collectors will not be able to take cans or jars that are half full of baked beans, dog food or marmalade!
- Remove lids and 'wash and squash' the plastic bottles. This will save space in your box and the council's collection vehicle.
Materials to be collected for recycling account for 70 percent of the volume of the average wheelie bin. If you use our recycling service you should have plenty of room in your landfill bin.
In the Bag
- Cardboard - packaging like cereal packets, pizza boxes. As there is very limited space on our recycling lorries, any large cardboard boxes should be broken down as much as possible and placed into your blue bag. Alternatively these can be taken to one of the HRWC's in Ross Way or Hawkinge. Information on these sites can be found here
- Paper - newspaper, magazines, brochures, junk mail, office paper
Box and bag ready for collection
On the day your recycling is collected, the lid should be taken off the box. When you put out your box for collection please put your blue sack of paper and card on top of the box.
