Solar - so good
Grants of up to £1,000 are being offered to Shepway residents towards the cost of solar hot water or electric systems.
The grants are being offered through pilot scheme launched by Shepway Council to promote solar renewable energy.
The renewable energy scheme is bring coordinated by the Kent Energy centre (KEC), a not-for-profit organisation that provides sustainable energy advice to home owners.
"The scheme offers outstanding value for money for solar technologies that people may have been thinking about but for whom cost has been the deciding factor," Said Mike Bundy from KEC. "With the likelihood of higher energy prices in the future, plus issues surrounding the security of supply, is likely to mean that renewable energy becomes increasingly popular - particularly solar technology which can easily be fitted into existing homes.
Colin Wood, Private Sector Housing Manager at Shepway Council, said the council supported the use of renewable energy technology in homes. "Not only does this help save money for householders, it also helps reduce the environmental impact of using fossil fuels."
He said there was a limit on the number of grants that could be approved and urged people to get in touch with the Kent Energy Centre on 0800 358 6669 for more information
