Household waste - bins

The majority of households in Shepway now use wheelie bins. Homes that cannot accommodate or use wheelie bins are supplied with purple sacks.

Your wheelie bin is emptied on the same day each fortnight, while communal bins and purple sacks are emptied or collected weekly. Recycling is also collected weekly.

A second wheelie bin is available free of charge to larger households. Please contact us if you are having difficulty with your rubbish collection and an assessment will be made.

A second blue bag and black box are available free of charge to all households on request.

If your wheelie bin goes missing or is damaged on the day of collection, please contact us to receive a free replacement. If your bin goes missing or is stolen on any other day, however, you will need to purchase a replacement.

You will need to purchase a bin if you have moved into a new property and there is not one there already. We will, however, provide you with a recycling box and bag free of charge.

What can I put in my bin?

Most general household waste can be put in your wheelie bin. The following items, however, should not be placed in your bin:

• Garden waste
• Hot ashes - wait until they have cooled
• Soil, stones, rubble or car parts
• Other heavy items - if your bin is too heavy it cannot be emptied
• Paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, cans, tins and glass jars and bottles - these items can be recycled and should be placed in your blue bag and black box. If you do not have a blue bag and black box, please contact us. (link)
