Disabled Reductions

A property in which a disabled person lives may qualify for a reduction in the amount of Council Tax actually payable. You are eligible for such a reduction if the property you live in is the sole or main residence of at least one disabled person and in which there is provided one or more of the following:

• A room which is not a bathroom, a kitchen or a lavatory and which is mainly used (whether for therapy or otherwise) by and is required for meeting the needs of any disabled person resident in the dwelling e.g. room used for dialysis.

• A bathroom or kitchen which is not the only bathroom or kitchen within the dwelling and which is required for meeting the needs of the disabled person resident in the dwelling e.g. specially designed bathroom to suit the needs of the disabled person.

• Sufficient floor space to permit the use of a wheelchair required for meeting the needs of the disabled person resident in the dwelling.

Please note

• For Council Tax purposes a wheelchair is only regarded as required for meeting an individual's needs if he or she needs to use it within the living accommodation in the dwelling concerned.

• Disabled person means a person who is substantially and permanently disabled (whether by illness, injury, congenital deformity or otherwise).

If you qualify your bill will be reduced to that of a property in the band immediately below the band of your property.  If your property is in Band A your bill will be reduced by 1/9th of the total amount of Band D.
