DIVERSITY POLICY

Shepway District Council believes that everyone in the District deserves a local authority that plans purposefully and performs strongly. In achieving this commitment, the Council has produced a Diversity Statement that acknowledges the diversity of the local community and the value that this brings to community life.

The Council has achieved Level 1 of the Equality Standard for Local Government and is working towards Level 2. The Equality Standard is a framework to help local authorities introduce a comprehensive and systematic approach to equality and diversity. We view the Council's commitment to equality in all its activities as part of its contribution to establishing a fair and just society, not only for the current inhabitants of the District but for those who will come after them.

The Comprehensive Equality Policy sets out Shepway District Council's arrangements for meeting the general and specific duties placed upon us by the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000, the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 and Sex Discrimination Act as amended by the Equality Act 2006. In addition, it sets out our proposed approach to age, religion or belief and sexual orientation for the period 2007-2009.
