Main ContentThe Arts in Shepway
The Shepway district is becoming known throughout Kent, the south-east and beyond as a bubbling cauldron of invention and entertaining activity. Inspired by the continuing development of the Creative Quarter in Folkestone, there is plenty going on throughout the district. As Shepway's Arts Development Officer, I will try to give a snapshot to residents and visitors about what is happening. There will be updates on the development as well as information on things to visit, see and do. There are also some pages devoted to the artists (in all art fields) and how they can get involved. There will be updates on funding opportunities, commissions and jobs to apply for or meetings, seminars and training sessions that they can attend. And I hope that people will send their comments to me! Let me have your feedback on activities or simply tell me about things that are going to happen in the district. The flower clock is the centrepiece of the wonderful display of flowers that, each summer, decorate The Leas. The clock was 'opened' in June and will continue to the end of the Society's Winter Exhibition (5 to 15 November). In the early 1960s Elizabeth Twistington Higgins, daughter of a famous surgeon and a member of the Society, had suffered polio and spent her time painting large oil paintings by mouth. With this historical connection the Society has decided that any money donated by the public (there is a collection box next to the clock) will be sent to the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists charity.
