Bus shelter campaign pays off

Two new bus shelters have been installed outside the Morrisons supermarket in Cheriton Road, Folkestone - thanks to the efforts of a local resident.

Lieselotte Hibbert-Lang, from Wear Bay Road, is a regular bus passenger and Morrisons' shopper. She campaigned to have the bus stops moved to their present location and to have shelters installed to save shoppers a longer walk with heavy shopping and to give them protection from the elements while they wait for their bus.

Morrisons stepped in to pay for one of the shelters and Shepway District Council agreed to pay for the other.

Steve Lennox, store general manager of Morrisons Folkestone, said: "We are a very community minded store and appreciate that customers using public transport, particularly the elderly, would struggle with the long walk to and from the bus stops. Therefore we were delighted to be able to make a significant contribution to pay for the construction of one of these bus shelters."

Stephen Gasche, Shepway Council's Transportation Officer, said the new shelters were part of a delivery of 11 across the district, funded jointly by Shepway Council and Kent County Council.

"We also had a welcome contribution from Sellindge Parish Council towards a new shelter for the village. We hope all the shelters will make travel easier and more comfortable for bus passengers.
