Composting

Home Composting

Composting is the process of recycling kitchen and/or garden waste. It is a natural process of decomposition resulting in a nutrient rich peat free material, which can be used to feed and condition the soil.

Did you know that more than 30% of our domestic waste can be composted!

Organic waste disposed of to landfill can be an environmental nuisance because it will produce methane (a combustible gas), and leachate (a toxic liquid that can penetrate the ground and contaminate aquifers - the source of our water supply). Local authorities actively monitor their landfill sites and take necessary steps to control these pollutants.

Shepway District Council has teamed up with evergreener.com to offer its residents home composters at reduced prices.  Please visit  www.shepway.getcomposting.com for further information or call the evergreener order line on 0844 571 4444.

You can also take your green garden waste to the Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC) where it will be composted into a soil improver which you can then buy from most HWRCs.   Alternatively, Shepway District Council also offers a chargeable garden waste scheme.  Details of which can be found here.
