The dense urban development of western Eastbourne lies mainly behind low cliffs. The area is popular for tourism and recreation.

The coastline is protected by the recently completed coast protection scheme. Work included new timber and rock groynes, repairs to the seawall and beach replenishment.

The existing level of coastal defence will be maintained through either beach recharge or recycling of beach material.
