Cliff End

Rother District Council and the Environment Agency

The communities of Cliff End and Winchelsea have developed at either end of this largely undeveloped low-lying coastline. The caravan parks are popular with tourists in summer.  The area is internationally important for plants, invertebrates and birds while the sunken forest is of geological importance.

The shoreline is retreating along part of this unit and the area is subject to some risk of flooding. Coastal defence structures are maintained by artificially replenishing the beaches. Existing defences will be maintained to protect the communities. In the long term there may be an opportunity to realign the shoreline where it fronts agricultural land.
