Councillors are elected to represent people living in geographical areas known as Wards. In the Shepway District there can be one, two or three councillors depending on the number of electors in the Ward.

Shepway District Council currently has 46 locally elected Councillors representing 22 wards.

Composition of the Council as at 3 October 2008:

 Conservative Party -  38
 Liberal Democrat Party -  5
 People First Party -  2
Independent -  1
 Total -  46

Although Councillors receive an allowance for their work and expenses, it is essentially a voluntary job involving a heavy caseload helping people resolve their problems and concerns.

The Cabinet has extensive decision making responsibilities. It currently comprises 7 Councillors each responsible for a particular portfolio area.  The Leader of the Council chairs the Cabinet. The work of the Cabinet is monitored and evaluated by two Overview and Scrutiny Committees, which report to the Council on performance generally.

Certain matters, such as licensing and development control, are dealt with by all party committees, made up of members from all parties.
