Main ContentHousing and Kent HomechoiceHomes that are decent, affordable, accessible, secure and in well managed neighbourhoods contribute towards the well being and the quality of life of the district's residents. The housing service contributes towards meeting local housing needs through the service it provides. These services include:
Kent HomechoiceSince February 2009, Shepway Council has changed the way it lets its homes. We have joined with other local councils to form Kent Homechoice. Kent Homechoice gives people more say about where they live. It introduces a new way of letting council and housing association homes across the district. Rather than the council allocating properties, the scheme enables tenants and housing applicants to express an interest in (‘bid’ for) the properties they wish to be considered for.
How do I join Kent Homechoice? To become a member of Kent Homechoice, you will first need to join the Shepway Housing List by completing and returning to us the following housing application form: Once we have received your completed housing application form and checked the details on it, you will receive your copy of the Kent Homechoice User Guide and a welcome pack. You will then be able to start bidding for the properties that you are interested in and that meet your housing needs. To ensure you have the correct information about how to bid for properties that are suitable for you, please read the Kent Homechoice User Guide together with the following booklet, the Shepway Housing List Information Booklet:
Remember, if your circumstances change after you have joined the Shepway Housing List, you must tell us by completing and returning to us the following form: For more information, visit the Kent Homechoice website at http://www.kenthomechoice.org.uk/ or click on the following leaflet:
Housing and Homelessness strategiesThe council’s housing strategy is a multi-tenure document. It sets out the housing needs of the district and the priorities and actions that the council and its partners will deliver over the lifetime of the strategy. A review of the council’s current Housing Strategy will begin later this year. The council has worked with Canterbury, Dover and Thanet councils to produce a sub-regional strategy to address homelessness and related issues across the area. It has been developed in consultation with local partners, stakeholders and service users.
East Kent Strategic Housing Market Assessment
The Strategic Housing Market Assessment (SHMA) that was jointly commissioned by the council in partnership with Dover, Thanet, Canterbury and Swale councils has recently been finalised. Strategic Housing Market Assessments are a key element of the evidence base that supports the development of local housing strategies and the local development framework.
