How can I arrange a 'special' collection?

The council offers a special collection service for the removal of bulky household items, and a separate service for the collection of old fridges/freezers.

The charges for this service are:

  • Bulky household items £15.50 for up to 2 items, £5.50 for each additional item
  • Fridges/Freezers £16.50 per item
  • Abortive visits - no refund given.

Bulky Household Items

Bulky items must be compactable, domestic waste, such as furniture, cookers, beds, etc.

Each single piece is classed as an item and must be less than 1.8m/6ft in length, and capable of being lifted safely by 2 people.

Unfortunately, there are a number of items that cannot be collected through this service.  These include:

  • Building materials
  • Garden Waste
  • Pieces of wood
  • Solid metals/cast iron
  • Metal/steel baths
  • Ceramic/metal sinks
  • Glass/mirrors
  • Black sacks of rubbish.

Fridges and Freezers

Special arrangements have to be made for the disposal of old fridges and freezers, and these are therefore collected on a separate day to bulky household items.

Arranging the Service

The simplest and quickest way of arranging a special collection is over the telephone, with payment by credit or debit card.  The Customer Services Team can be contacted on Telephone number 01303 858660.

Alternatively, you can visit the Civic Centre or One Stop Services, or you can write, enclosing a cheque (made payable to Shepway District Council), to:

Customer Services,
Shepway District Council
Civic Centre
Castle Hill Avenue
Folkestone, CT20 2QY

If the request is made in writing, please ensure you include the following information:

  • Your name and address
  • Your telephone number (so we can phone to arrange a collection date)
  • Each of the items to be collected
  • Where the items will be left*

*Please note, the items must be left outside the front of the property (on a drive or front garden) and must be accessible to the collectors. The collectors are not insured to come into your property.

In special circumstances we can offer a collection in which they will come into the property to collect the items but an permission form must be signed before the collection can take place.

From receipt of your request and payment, the items will be collected within 10 working days. We will call you to arrange a date for the collection.

Abortive Visits

Where collections are aborted due to items not being placed out for collection, a further fee is payable before the collection can be rearranged.

If you require any further information or advice about this service, please contact the Customer Services Team on Telephone number 01303 858660.
